Eye exams incorporate multiple components to ensure a thorough review of the patient’s eyes and vision. The first part of the exam includes a general review of the patient’s medical history and overall health. Each eye will then be tested using a chart to determine whether there are any issues with near or far sighted vision. Other initial tests are also performed to evaluate specific areas of the eye and the visual functions. For patients who wear contact lenses, a keratometry is completed to measure the curve of the cornea. This is an important factor in establishing the correct curvature for contact lenses. If a patient requires glasses, a refraction is performed as part of the eye exam to determine the proper lens power to be used in the glasse (adjusting for an astigmatism, and/or for nearsightedness or farsightedness).

Eye exam services include an evaluation of the external areas of the eye, such as the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva and surrounding areas. The pupil will sometimes be dilated so that the internal sections of the eyes can be evaluated. This will include both the posterior section of the eye and the retina. Eye pressure will also be evaluated to determine if there are any issues with glaucoma. Any additional testing may be administered if there are any specific concerns or if further assessment is required.

Regular Eye exams can prevent, detect and/or treat a variety of conditions that may affect a patient’s vision. These conditions include myopia, where the patient cannot clearly see distant objects, and hyperopia, where the patient cannot see close objects. Other common vision conditions include Astigmatisms (an unevenly shaped cornea or curved lens within the eye), Presbyopia (loss of flexibility in the crystalline lens of the eye), Strabismus (poor muscle control of the eye resulting in one or both of the eyes turning up, down, in or out) and Amblyopia (the lack or loss of development in one eye). Eye exams can also address Spots and Floaters in the eye, which are cases in which an individual can see cloudy particles within their eye.
